Hedge Portals
Mixed media works on paper
These drawings are about standing on the boundary or threshold of a new and different world. It is a response to peering into hedgerows, the hollows of trees or travelling down previously unexplored sunken lanes or through hollow ways. There is a magical sense of journeying into the unknown and of experiencing the unexpected. These spaces present the possibility of becoming portals into other worlds. Inside the mass of ramshackle, chaotic structure there is such unexpected beauty and fresh energy to be found. The gnarled and twisted construction of forms and dark damp recesses are places where new life is formed. They are unexpected havens for wildlife and the renewal of flora and fauna. Lichen, moss and fungi develop within this microcosm as key species within the ecosystem serving as both a food source and habitat for many animal and bird species as well as protecting trees and rocks from extreme elements such as rain wind and snow. These are sanctuaries of safety and protection from the vagaries of the world.
Photomontage is the starting point for this work constructed from torn up black and white photographs taken on my explorations around the Cornish lanes and pastures and from the inside of hedgerows. Deconstruction and reconstruction are consistent themes within the development process of my work as I challenge myself to create new possibilities from broken and discarded imagery.
