Finding a Winter Palette

The year is moving on but it's still very much winter. I've recently managed to get out for a couple of drawing sessions to record what remains of a winter palette before the season changes.
Surprisingly I have preferred the dull days when the light is flat. I can observe the colours much better in these conditions. Bright sunlight casts strong and distracting shadows, particularly at this time of year when it is so low in the sky. It has been chilly but I've wrapped up and got out there!

A bit like acclimatising our eyes to seeing in the dark, the more time that I've spent looking the more the colours have emerged and become apparent. I am observing lots of mauves and warm browns and reds in there and surprisingly some very bright 'spring' greens in addition to the wintery greys. I'm really looking forward to bringing these together to create a very different and distinctive feel in my next series of paintings
