The paintings for the Cornish Pasture series have continued to develop from paper onto unprimed canvas which has meant stretching my own canvases because the manufactured ones always come pre-primed.
I've chosen to work on unprimed canvas in order to allow for the soak staining effect. Without primer canvas is a much more porous material and rather like watercolour paper it absorbs the pigment resulting in some lovely natural, stained effects as the paint soaks into the weave.
This is a process that I have continued to return to over the years in response to varying subject matter. This time around I am combining it with other application techniques such as resist using oil bars and mark making with rags etc which is creating some really interesting and relevant effects.
