Reflecting on the Process

I've probably made something in the region of 100 drawings over the last three weeks in preparation for "Walking the Land" summer school with Emily Ball Painting which begins tomorrow. I'm feeling quite in awe of how I am going to translate some of this information into painting.... I've just spent an hour or so reviewing, selecting & reflecting and asking myself the following questions:

  1. Which processes did I like most?

  2. How did these processes change or enhance my feelings of being in the landscape?

  3. Can the memory of making the work be a trigger for the experience of being out in the landscape?

I've selected the following:

  1. Pieces that are strangely satisfying.

  2. Pieces that challenge me.

  3. A "rogue" study - one that is awkward, uncomfortable and doesn't feel like me at all!

I know that all of these are just starting points and that ultimately what the paintings look like will be the start of a fresh journey. I need myself to be free of any preconceptions and expectations in order to allow for this to happen which is both exciting and a little bit scary. I just have to trust in the process...
